This is the text of Betty Piso Christenson telling about her early experiences making Ukrainian colored eggs, recorded September 21, 1998 by Michael Kline in Washington, D.C. I started out with the very simple ones when I was about twelve years old—the krizanky, the drop-pull technique. And while we were doing that, my mother and I, she used to explain to me the beautiful five and six colored eggs that were in the Ukraine. But, she says, I can’t show you could to do them, honey, because I don’t have the tools or the dyes. But, she says, when you grow-up, go to Canada, because father settled in Suring and his brother in Moosejaw, Canada, and it’s a strong Ukrainian culture up there. But she says, go there, and I’m sure they will know about it. |
