Vita Kakulis

Latvian Weaving
Bayside, WI

A native of Valmiera, Latvia, Vita had to flee her country during World War II. She first learned belt weaving in refugee camps in Germany and refined those skills later in life in Milwaukee. Now retired, Vita was an expert in Latvian-style weaving. Her program included a demonstration of belt weaving and display of the craft’s tools and materials. She also wore a traditional Latvian costume for her presentation.
