Kwong Yem Han

This is the text of Kwong Yem Han explaining that discipline is an important part of learning Chinese calligraphy and painting. It was recorded September 20, 2003 by Nicole Saylor in Pepin, Wisconsin.

I remember my master teacher used to use a ruler to make sure my lines were straight because this a discipline.

Art is discipline and respect, whereas I think American painting is be creative, do your own thing, whereas Chinese painting and calligraphy are more structured, they're more in the discipline, where you have to practice. The calligraphy ‘eternity,’ you would do it morning, noon, and night until it is perfect. So a lot of times, my students would say, ‘You do it so perfectly,’ but do they realize how many hours I spent, morning, noon, and night, practicing it?
