Joe Bee Xiong

This is the text of Joe Bee Xiong demonstrating how he can "talk" by playing the jar, recorded at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, 1998.

This instrument I like to carry in my pocket, and I like to play whenever I have time. Most of the instruments that we play here today is vocal. It’s not like the Western music at all. First, let me play one in English and then I will play one in Hmong.

Do you understand what I say? See, that is what I mean.
