Chinese Knotting and Foodways
Neenah, WI

Shujin Judy Yeh. Photo by Twyla Clark.Shujin Judy Yeh is a master at the traditional art of Chinese decorative knots. Judy first learned to tie a knot for buttons from her grandmother in Taiwan.  She taught herself other knots and also studied with two talented knotters in Taiwan before moving to the U.S. in 1984. Judy has led knotting projects with young children and adults.

Photo by Twyla Clark.Judy is also a talented cook.  Although she never was taught to cook while living at home in Taiwan, when Judy moved to the U.S. she taught herself to cook many traditional Chinese and Taiwanese foods. One example is tsung tzu, a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves that is traditionally served during the Dragon Boat Festival in early summer. Judy can demonstrate many dishes and talk about the cultural significance of those foods. For example, why is fish eaten at the Chinese New Year?
